Perhaps you know too well the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet, but do you know that of Ali and Nino? Today on Wonders of the World on Youth Shades TV, you will know their story. I am Yakkie and I hope you enjoy this video. First told in the 1937 novel, Ali and Nino, is a tragic tale of lovers who end up being kept apart due to their religious and cultural background differences. Ali, a Muslim, falls in love with a Georgian princess, Nino, and they face many struggles in the path of their love. Sadly, after they are finally able to be together, they find themselves separated for eternity by the invasion of Soviet Russia, when Ali is killed. The author of the novel is unknown, however, it is credited to the alias Kurban Said.
It was this love story that inspired Georgian artist Tamara to create her monumental moving sculpture in 2010. The giant metal artwork also known as the “Statue of Love,” consists of two somewhat transparent figures made of stacked segments. Each day at 7 PM, the two figures move towards each other controlled by computer, eventually merging as they pass through each other. But just like Ali and Nino, these steel figures can’t stay together forever. This process usually lasts for about ten minutes, lit with bright changing colours that bring the statues to life.
Below is a depiction of the process in 6 images.
